The History of Edwardian Conservatories

Conservatories were very popular in the Edwardian period of architecture (1901-1914). During this time conservatories took on a mainly square or rectangular shape, with a hipped roof at one end and bold features such as “fanlights”, a smaller row of windows at the top of the side framing, which may open, sometimes called “clerestory windows”. Gable-fronted conservatories may also sometimes be referred to as an Edwardian design, but this design is actually more typical of the Georgian period (1714-1830).

The simple layout of Edwardian conservatories mean that they are well suited to small tight spaces, but thy can also be fitted to more open spaces where a more simplistic or “unfussy” design is desirable, as compared to Georgian, Victorian or other designs. Despite their overall simplicity, Edwardian conservatories can still incorporate all of the decorative features found on other conservatory designs, such as leaded or patterned glass, glazing bars in straight or curved designs, decorative pilasters, cornices, dentil moulds and more.

All of our conservatories and orangeries can also incorporate manually or electrically operated roof vents, which can be opened to let hot air out of the conservatory in the summer. All of our products can also optionally have advanced glass coatings which reflect most of the Sun’s ultraviolet(UV) light and with it much of the heat energy that enters through the glass, keeping things cool and comfortable, and protecting furnishings from degradation due to UV bleaching.
