More About Our Wood Orangeries

If you are thinking of extending your home, creating a bright and comfortable space as part of a new-build home, or even looking to build a dining area or similar for a restaurant or hotel, a wood orangery is an excellent choice. Orangeries are very versatile buildings which have window and door framing forming the main part of the side of the structure, with a flat roof element which has one or more glazed lantern roofs set into it. The glazed roofs create a wonderful naturally lit space, while the flat roof section, which is usually plastered inside the building, allows room for lighting and helps to keep the space warm and usable all year round and at all hours.

Orangeries are often thought of as more expensive than conservatories, but this isn’t always the case. Where a building has to fit into an awkwardly shaped space, has to have a particularly large footprint, or where certain elements which have structural implications are included (for example bifolding doors with a large clear opening) then an orangery can actually be cheaper than a comparable conservatory. There are two main reasons for this: With a conservatory, if the building is an unusual shape or is particularly large, then the roof must be made more complicated or broken up into smaller sub-structures, as limits are hit with the maximum size of glass panes and the structural strength of roof components like rafters. The other reason ties into this, in that structural elements such as steels are much easier to “build-into” or hide within the structure of an orangery than in a comparable conservatory – if for example a large set of bifolding doors is required, this will usually require a steel beam above for support. In an orangery this will be hidden within the flat roof structure, whereas there is no easy way to hide this within a conservatory.

Wood is the perfect choice of material for an orangery – it is strong, durable and versatile, and although it is often imitated, nothing can truly match the beautiful appearance of wood. Wooden orangeries are becoming increasingly popular in the UK and we specialise in designing and manufacturing these elegant and luxurious buildings.

Because orangeries feel more like a room than conservatories, they are the perfect choice for kitchen, lounge or dining room extensions. We have worked on many similar projects in the past and you can be sure that our expertise will help you build the perfect wood orangery extension for your home.
